Lt Col (Ret) William L. Adkins went to be with the lord on Friday, April 24, 2009. Born in Akron, Ohio on June 19, 1926 to William and Mabel Adkins, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Virginia and his parents. Bill served in the Air Force from 1944 to 1946, graduating Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio in 1950. In that year he was recalled to active duty with the Air National Guard as First Lieutenant, serving as a medical materials officer. His Air National Guard service ended in 1954, but in the following year, Bill returned to the Air Force where from 1962 to 1966 he was the assistant administrator of the Orlando Air Force Base Hospital in Orlando, Florida. From 1966 to 1969 he was the associate administrator of the US Airford Medical Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and from 1969 to 1970 was adminsitrator on the 6045th US Air Force Hospital in Osan, Korea. It was after his posting in Osan that he returned to Wright-Patterson with a new assignment as Chief of Staff for the financial management division. Bill continued his education along the way, receiving his Masters degree in Hospital Administration from Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri in 1962. In 1971 he accedpted the position of assistant admnistrator at Providence Hospital in Holyoke, Massachusetts where he remainted until 1988. Bill is survived by his loving family; his wife, Martha of 18 years; sister, Anita (Tom) Krengle, Carmel, Indiana; children, William R. (Mary) of West Kingston, Rhode Island, Peggy (Robert) Hartmann of Oviedo, Florida and Sam (Anne) Weems of Clarksville; grandchildren, Alyssa Hartmann, Kaiver and Rainer Adkins, Sara, Samantha and Sean Weems along with several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Saturday, May 9th, from 10 a.m. until the hour of the hour of service at Madison Street United Methodist Church. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 9th at Madison Street United Methodist Church in the main sanctuary.The Reverend Lenoir Culbertson will be presiding over the service.
