Virginia Hyer Leddy , 80, of Clarksville, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2010 at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Chapel with Rev. Lenoir Culbertson officiating. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, Hopkinsville, KY. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Leddy born July 30, 1929, in Amite County, Mississippi, an only child to Cecil Guy Hyer and Robbie Cockerham Hyer, is survived by her husband, John T. Leddy, daughters Angela and Paula, sons John and Andy, and seven grandchildren. Upon her husband's retirement from the Army she was active in many Volunteer outlets in this, their last assignment. They came to Clarksville in 1990 from an 18 year assignment at the Pentagon where Col. Leddy was in the Surgeon Generals Office. She was an administrative assistant to the Vice President of Nursing Department of Goodwin House, an Episcopal Retirement and long-term care facility in Alexandria, Virginia. She worked there twelve years prior to coming to Clarksville. During her husband's career she served as a national officer of the Woman's Auxiliary to the American Optometric Association. Mrs. Leddy, upon retirement, volunteered and was active in Madison Street United Methodist Church, President of MSUMW, served on Board of Trustees for the Catholic Men's Home, Board of Trustees for Habitat for Humanity, Ladies Association of the Clarksville Country Club, Clarksville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Chairman of Community Concert Series, Loaves and Fishes, volunteered at Clarksville Museum and a voting poll worker for several years. At the age of ten her family moved from Amite County to McComb, Mississippi. She was popular in high school holding class officer of treasurer in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. She was a cheerleader, received the DAR good citizenship award, DeMalay Sweetheart award, and was selected Miss Hospitality for McComb sponsored through the Lions Club. After graduating from McComb High School she and her best friend attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Wesson, MS, where she again enjoyed popularity by being a cheerleader, named most beautiful, was a member of the International Relations Club, Masque and Wig Drama Group, YWCA, and Wesley Foundation Council. Mrs. Leddy and her husband of 60 years met as sophomores in high school and it was a romance that continued through the years. After his graduation from Southern College of Optometry he practiced his optometric profession in Centerville, MS, for three years before entering the Army as a 1st Lieutenant. Their 32 years of military service is remembered as a glorious long vacation having lived in Ft. Carson - Colorado Springs, CO, Ft. Benning - Columbus, GA, 156th General Hospital - Bad Kreuznach, Germany, Ft. Sam Houston - San Antonio, TX, Sandia Base - Albuquerque, NM, and the Pentagon Clinic assigned to Walter Reed Hospital Washington, DC. At each of her husbands assignments she was active in the Officers Wives Club and a Red Cross Gray Lady. Wherever she lived she served as an officer in the Medical Wives Group and Parent Teacher Association.
