Tommy Schmittou

Gary Thomas (Tommy) Schmittou, age 73, of Clarksville, TN passed away on January 17, 2025 at Tennova Hospital, Clarksville, TN. 

Tommy (Bulldog) was born February 9, 1951 in Clarksville, TN to the late Griff and Margaret Schmittou. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Danny Schmittou and Ronald (Ronnie) Schmittou. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at McReynolds, Nave & Larson Funeral Home with Dr. Ronny Raines and Dr. Roger Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11:00 until the hour of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow immediately at Resthaven Cemetery. 

Tommy was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Clarksville, and a member of Mark Briggs’ Sunday School class. He graduated from Clarksville High School and Austin Peay State University, worked for Frosty Morn in the business office until the plant was closed, worked for Briggs and Stanfill Clothing Store and Briggs Clothiers in both Hopkinsville and Clarksville stores until he retired in 2021. Tommy helped dress many of Clarksville's finest while working closely with Ernie Briggs at both stores. Tommy was a dedicated son to both parents, a well-loved brother, and an avid fisherman. He enjoyed watching football and baseball games, was meticulous in his record keeping of his customers he helped at Briggs Clothiers, and was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews (especially at Christmas). He enjoyed birdwatching and sitting outside under his carport talking to family and neighbors stopping by for a good conversation. One of his favorite comments when leaving a family meal was "Enjoyed it" as he left with his plate of leftovers!

Survivors include his sisters, Barbara Briggs and Jane Schroeder; brothers, Pete (Amy) Schmittou, Donald (Sue) Schmittou; sister-in-law, Sheila Schmittou; fourteen nieces and nephews; and many other great nieces and nephews. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church building fund. Arrangements are in the care of McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home.
