Samuel JR (John) Shepard, 81, Clarksville, died sadly departed from this life Saturday, August 16, 2008, at his residence. He was a kind, loving, supportive man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Chapel with Rev. Byron Dumas officiating. Burial will be in Shepard Family Cemetery, Stroudsville, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Shepard was born June 12, 1927 in Stroudsville, Tennessee, youngest of 8 children from the union of the late Samuel Jessie Shepard and Francis N. Morris Shepard. He was a Sergeant in the 24th Infantry during the Korean War, which resulted in injuries that led to his becoming 100 percent disabled later in life. Mr. Shepard was a hero for his country but utmost to his children. He was a heavy equipment mechanic and welder by trade but later raised top-quality tobacco crops. He was a member of the Cumberland River Archaeological Society, longtime member of Little Hope Baptist Church, gifted multi-instrument musician and violin (fiddle) maker. He had many hobbies and was an avid Nascar fan. Also, he was overseer of the Shepard Family Cemetery in Robertson Co., TN for many years, in which he took great pride. Mr. Shepard was a loving and devoted husband to his late wife, Melba Joyce Weakley for over 50 years. He is survived by one son, Johnny B. Shepard (Lynn), daughters Margaret Joy Wall (Terry), Barbara G. Black (Danny),. Debra S. Shepard, all from Clarksville, TN, and Sherry Y. Stavropoulos (Tim) of Hendersonville, TN. He had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Jewel Holt of Clarksville, TN and Esther Douglas of Springfield, TN. Pallbearers will be John Shepard, David Wall, Christopher Stavropoulos, T.J. Keller, Donnie Douglas and Rusty Shepard. Honorary pallbearers will be Cameron Schmittou, Jerry Holt, and Frank Holt.
