Samuel L. Kerr, age 79, of Erin, TN, peacefully left to meet his Maker, August 21, 2021 while at his home in Erin.
He was born to John Dee and Mary Gillahan Kerr in Murfreesboro, TN, on December 23, 1941, where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Murfreesboro Central High School (Class of 1960) and received his B.S. from MTSU in 1966.
Sam was very involved in TSSAA for many years. He was one of those employees that was “when there was no one available to do the job, call Sam”. Touching on many accomplishments (but not covering near all) you will find his affiliation with sports to be long and varied working from Junior Pro to college level sports. He was a 50+ year sports official for the TSSAA Football Supervisor and worked many state championship games during those years. Sam worked as a TSSAA Football Supervisor of Officials, Directed the TSSAA State Fast Pitch Softball Tournament many years, headed Softball for the TSSAA state wide, was one of three regional softball coordinators, umpired the first ever TSSAA Fast Pitch Softball Tournament and many others, and is a member of the TSSAA High School Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2012. In addition, he was a 6 year OVC College women’s basketball official, served on the National High School Fast Pitch Softball Rules Committee, officiated 21 OVC Track and Field Championships, officiated Pre-Olympic Wheel-Chair Basketball and for 25 years was in charge of the side line officials (Chain Crew) for Middle TN State University Football. He and his wife, Nelda, formed the merchandising team that supplied all the souvenirs for every TSSAA State Championship event (1991-2001).
Sam was well known from Memphis to Bristol. If you knew Sam Kerr, you likely had a “Sam Kerr Story” to relate. To know him was to love him. He could talk to a homeless person or the president of the USA with equal ease.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his devoted cat, Graycie Noel. He is survived by Nelda Nolen Kerr, his loving, devoted wife of 51 years and by two special girls he thought as of grandchildren; Nicole McGlashing and Sierra Merrell, and Matt McGlashing (husband of Nicole), all of Clarksville, TN.
Sam was affiliated with Erin Church of the Nazarene. There will be a memorial celebration of life service planned in the near future.
