Miss Ruby Mae Wills George’s Sunrise was May 30th 1905 in Woodlawn, Tennessee in Montgomery County. Her Sunset was April 6th, 2015 in Clarksville, Tennessee.
She was the oldest child born to Ruben Wills and Mary Magdalene Fletcher. This union bore eight (8) wonderful children (Audie Wills Outlaw, Christine Wills Thomas, Flossie Wills Whitlock, Hazel Wills Adams, Claudie Wills, Earlie Wills, Mitchell Wills).
Miss Ruby or Cousin Ruby often said “Hard times won’t kill you.” That’s the story of her marvelous blessed life.
Prior to 1942, she lived and went to church and school in the Pleasant Hill Community. After Camp Campbell purchased this property, she moved to the Oakwood community. She migrated to Evansville, Indiana and back to Oakwood, Tennessee.
She previously resided in downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. She recently resided at the Clarksville Rehabilitation Center until she answered the call of God to come on home to your new mansion.
Living in the Pleasant Hill community area, her parents were always share croppers and off-season farmers. After the Pleasant Hill Property was purchased by Campbell in 1942, her family moved to the Joe McNichols farm in Woodlawn, Tennessee. She was always a hard worker on the farm and her assignments were in the fields like the male field workers. She often went to work and church barefooted. She could “strip” tobacco with the best of them.
On November 19th 1935 she married the late Jack Nathan George. They had a short stay in Evansville, Indiana working seasonal work picking corn and other farm work. In 1937 they moved back to the Woodlawn community. Together they had one son, the late Jack R. George, Jr.
She is survived by her four (4) Grandchildren (Eurana Garcia, Regina Garnett, Ricky Clements and Robert George, six (6) Great-Grandchildren, two (2) Great-Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by her Daughter-in-Law and Care-giver, Regina Patterson George. She has a treasure of beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. She had a large Church family and many, many friends.
She has always been a person to share with family members, church and the community. If she had it, then you had it. She especially was eager to share with her brothers and sisters in order to get attention, because of the seven children; she was the smallest in height but not in spirit. She worked as a general farm hand worker, tobacco factory worker and domestic worker. She has never been fired from any job. Job changes were for self improvement and better living conditions.
She never owned a home and never driven a car. But as she would put it, “Baby, I’m blessed.” She is a very active lady. She lived alone until the wonderful age of 105 and was very active member of the Saint Paul AME Church, Saint Paul Community, and Woodlawn, Tennessee for over 70 years.
She gracefully performs her duties as a member of the Mother’s Board and Senior Choir. She has stated that she only missed Church when her ride was sick or out of town. She loved to read the Bible and talk about how great God has been in keeping her strong physically and mentally.
She did her own banking, housekeeping, prepares her own food and rides the city bus to all parts of Clarksville to purchase her groceries and shopping even well over the age of 100. She even traveled to Indiana often to take care of her two sisters who proceeded her in death.
She occasionally stopped off at the drug store to purchase her Tylenol, which is the only medication she ever took. She has never been on a diet. She enjoys the use of her “snuff.” She says, “A dip of snuff puts strength in your bones.”
Her hobbies and passion after her church duties were fishing, caring for her house plants and vegetable garden. God blessed her with a “Green Thumb.”
Her favorite color was pink.
Her favorite song was “Just Think of His Goodness to You.”
Her favorite scripture was 23rd Psalm.
Her favorite flower was roses.
Her favorite food was fried chicken.
May God be praised for her longevity of life and spirit. A lasting legacy for others to follow and emulate much like our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
