Richard Eugene Thurmond, age 67, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2018 at the chapel of McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home with Chaplain Herman Cheatham officiating. Burial with Full Army Honors will follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West.
Richard’s family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service Friday at the funeral home.
Richard was born on October 30, 1950 in Pensacola, Florida, son to the late Willie Eugene Thurmond and Lillie Mae Elliott Thurmond.
Mr. Thurmond is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Greene Thurmond; son, Richard Paul Thurmond; sister, Barbara Jean Thurmond Zars (Keith) of San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
1st Sgt. E8 Richard Thurmond served 24 years in the United States Military, Dept. of the Army. His service included tours in Vietnam, Panama, and Korea. After his dedicated service to his country he retired from Fort Campbell’s 101st Airborne Division and made Clarksville his home.
He was an active member of the Western Kentucky and Tennessee Chapter of 101st Airborne Division. After retiring Mr. Thurmond, along with his son, established and managed a water sprinkling system business.
Happily married for 45 ½ years, Richard was a devoted husband and loving father. Family was very important to him. He loved them all. He also shared a special close relationship with his sister Barbara. Some of his fondest memories and best times were spent fishing with his son.
