Helen Phoebe Mitchum died peacefully on August 26, 2016 at St. Thomas Hospital after a brief illness.
Phoebe was born on April 14, 1927 in Merigold, Mississippi, part of the Mississippi Delta. After graduating from high school in Merigold, she attended Blue Mountain College for Women in Mississippi, and Bowling Green College of Commerce in Kentucky. She then began work at an accounting firm in Memphis. There she met Webb Mitchum, a young pharmacy student just recently returned from honorable service in the Pacific Theater during WWII.
Phoebe and Webb married on November 20, 1949; following their marriage they lived in Erin, TN. Phoebe taught Sunday school at Erin Baptist Church and served as a Cub Scout Den mother. Phoebe had a natural curiosity and a love of reading and music. She served on the Houston County Library Board and the Warriota Regional Library Board. She was an accomplished pianist and Organist and played at the Erin Baptist Church. She was an authority on birds and their numerous species in Middle Tennessee. Phoebe was a lifelong Christian and remained rooted in her Baptist faith.
She is predeceased by her parents, Ruth Ellington and William Henry Graves, and brother, Jack Graves. She is survived by her husband, Webb, children, Mitch (Emily) of Erin and Melanie Mitchum Leader (Bill) of Nashville, and grandchildren, Amy Mitchum, Daniel Curtis Leader, John Mitchum Leader and Elizabeth Ellington Leader, and sister Charlotte Graves Spotts.
A funeral service will be held at Nave Funeral Home, Erin, Tennessee at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2016 followed by burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, Erin. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service Sunday afternoon.
Serving as pallbearers will be Daniel Leaders, Bret Alsobrooks, Dan Alsobrooks, Bob Simpson, Albert Mitchum, and Carl Mitchum. Honorary pallbearers will be John Leader, Bill Leader, Erin Baptist Church Deacons, Phillip Powell, and Allen McCampbell.
