Muriel Sykes - 1923 Muriel M.Sykes, 85, Stewart, died Wednesday, October 7,2009, at her residence. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Saturday October 24,2009 at Stewart United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Leatherwood Cemetery. The remains are to be cremated. Nave Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Muriel was born December 22,1923 in Swansea,South Wales,Great Britain daughter of Charles and Phyllis Yapp.She met her husband G.R.(Gus)during the war.He was a native of Houston County,Tn.stationed in South Wales.They Married in Wales in 1947 and she came to the US with him,settling in Detroit.Muriel was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include her sister Beryl Phillips of Epsom,Surrey,UK one daughter D.Anne Sykes of Stewart,Tn.and one son Robert C.Sykes and his wife Kyoko of Salinas,Ca.Muriel also had three grandsons Kyle,Keith and Kurt.These boys are the sons of Mary Lee who grew up next to Muriel in Michigan.Mrs.Sykes was an Episcopalian,but attended the Stewart Methodist Church.She was a member of the Friendship McKinnon FCE and was a voting member of the Stewart Community Center.
