MSG (Ret) Melvin H. Smith, age 70, of Clarksville, passed away Friday January 11, 2013 at Blanchfield Army Community Hosptial.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2013 at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Chapel. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West with Full Military Honors. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until the hour of service Monday at the funeral home.
Melvin was born March 9, 1942 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, son of Lewis M. and Ruth L. Hile Smith. Melvin retired from the U.S. Army following a prestigious 23 year military career. Among other accomplishments, Melvin served two tours in Vietnam, participated and completed Airborne, Recondo, and Ranger Schools and was a highly-respected Jumpmaster and Air Assault School Instructor. Following retirement Melvin was a driver for Florim USA.
He is survived by his loving family which includes his wife, April Lacy Dawson-Smith of Clarksville, sons Shane Smith (Melissa) of Denver, North Carolina, Ron Dawson and wife B.J. of Clarksville, and Rodd Dawson of Clarksville, grandchildren, Macy and Max Dawson, both of Clarksville and Nathan, Andrew, and Kiersten Smith, all of North Carolina, and his brother, Phillip Smith of Kendallville, Indiana.
