McArthur Girlie

April 18, 1929 — June 3, 2019

McArthur “Mac” Girlie, 90, of Dover, Tennessee peacefully passed away in the comfort of his own home surrounded by family and caregivers on June 3, 2019. Mac was born in 1929 in Alabama to parents Monroe and Susie Girlie. He was the third oldest in a family of fourteen.
Mac joined the Air Force at age 18 and served for four years. After leaving the Air Force, Mac was drafted into the Army and sent to the Korean War. Mac was a Korean War Veteran and was a Purple Heart recipient as well as the recipient of two Oak Leaf Clusters. Mac lived, with his family, in Northern Illinois for 30 years where he worked as a diesel mechanic. He retired, with his wife, to Tennessee where he lived for 25 years. He truly enjoyed working as a diesel mechanic, but in his retired time, he enjoyed fishing, sitting on the porch and visiting with family and friends, especially his friends Eddie and Frankie, as well as, spending time with his children and grandchildren whenever he could. Mac loved watching football and baseball. He was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan, in both good times and bad. He watched the Chicago Bears win the Super Bowl and finally witnessed the Cubs win the World Series. A feat he didn’t believe would happen in his lifetime.
Mac is survived by his wife Jean Girlie of 56 years, son Robert (Judy) Everhart and daughters Sandra (Marcel) Anderson, Patricia (Edward) Wesseln and Melissa (Verlen) Morphey; sisters Sadie (Dale) Davis, May Fitts and Doris (Mike) Durden, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Mac is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Everhart, his parents and ten brothers and sisters.
A special thank you to Tennessee Quality Homecare and Hospice for their care and support during Mac’s final days. Also, a special thank you to Mac’s caregivers Cindy, Rosa and Haylie, whose care and support, especially during his final days, was incredible. A very special thank you to Destinee Lamberth, with Tennessee Quality Homecare and Hospice, whose assistance and care for Mac has been invaluable throughout the past few years. The family would also like to thank Nave Funeral Home in Erin, TN for being accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.
Arrangements are in the care of Nave Funeral Home, (931) 289-4277, NaveFuneralHomes.com.
