Mary Adkins Alsobrooks, 89, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico for the past 17 years, died Thursday, November 18, 2010. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Chapel with Mary' nephew, Neal Alsobrooks, will be officiating and her niece, Kathy Threatt will be playing the piano per Mary' request. Burial will be in Alsobrooks Cemetery in Erin, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Monday, November 22, 2010 and from 10 a.m. until the hour of service Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the funeral home. Mary was born in Houston County, Tennessee, daughter of the late Van and Dora Jamison Adkins, on September 24, 1921. She was an elementary school teacher for 35 years, beginning her teaching career in a one-room school, grades 1-8, in Houston County. She often told that one of her teaching duties was to bring in firewood and start the morning fire in the wood stove prior to the children arriving for the day. She retired as a Kindergarten teacher from Ft. Campbell, Kentucky school system. She also taught Sunday school for many years at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Clarksville, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Austin Peay State University and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher' Sorority. While Mary never moved her church membership from her Tennessee church, she attended and had great affection for her fellow church members at the Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. She was a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, teacher and friend. She will be missed and remembered for her delicious southern meals, her deep and abiding Christian faith and her love of sports, especially the University of Tennessee football and Lady Vols basketball. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Green and son-in-law Bruce Green of Albuquerque; grandchildren, John Green (Andrea) of Carlsbad, California, Janet Green Helton (Robert) of Temecula, California, and Jim Green, Brooke Garcia (Jody) and Megan Marshall, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; a special niece, Nina Baker (David) of Clarksville, Tennessee and her family, and numerous, beloved nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and extended family. Numerous friends, both in New Mexico and Tennessee, also survive her. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ralph K. Alsobrooks. She was the last surviving sibling in her family. Pallbearers will be Dennis Adkins, George Alsobrooks, David Baker, Doug Burch, Jason Gillespie and OâÂÂNeil Winters. The family wishes to thank all of Mary' caregivers over the years; the staff at The Montebello on Academy; her Hospice staff at Vista Care Hospice; Don Wilson and her Bible Study Group from Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church; members of Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and special thanks to her devoted caregiver and friend, Jan Cherry and to special family friend, George Bundrant.
