Martha Jo Spencer, age 91, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2016 in Erin,
Tennessee. She was born on December 29, 1924 in Erin and lived her entire life in her
beloved community of Erin.She is predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Thomas Douglas Spencer, Sr., and her parents, Leon Franklin Stone and Mary Anna Satterwhite Stone, and her siblings
Virginia McGee, Howard Stone, Frank Ray Stone, and Patsy Uffelman.
She is survived by her son Thomas Douglas Spencer, II (Brenda), her daughter Judy
Spencer Bolton (Bob), and grandchildren Thomas Douglas Spencer, III (Megan) and
Suzanne Spencer Wells (Ted), and great-grandchildren Carter Spencer, Reid Spencer,
Ella Kate Spencer, Teddy Wells, and Brody Wells. Martha Jo and her husband Tom Doug both attended school in Erin, and after marrying in 1943, lived and worked on a dairy farm. They left the farm a few years later and opened a hardware business, the Western Auto Store, on Erin's town square where
they both worked for the remainder of their careers. During this time in business, they
met and made friends with nearly every resident of Houston County. They were both
life-long members of the Erin United Methodist Church. Martha Jo is remembered for her love of needlecraft, having supplied all of the family and many in the community with one of her crocheted afghans. She was a loving daughter, mother, and grandmother. As those close to her know, her favorite color was
red. The family would like to honor Martha Jo by asking those in attendance of her
memorial service to wear a red accessory. Her memorial service will be held at the Nave Funeral Home Chapel in Erin on December 1 at 11 am. Brother Paul Moody will officiate. Visitation will precede the
service from 9-11 am in the chapel. Burial is in Erin's Oak Hill Cemetery. Honorary pall bearers are: Linda and Mitchell Smithey, Cass Rye, Susan and Kent Bell, Perry Uffelman, Patricia Uffelman Shearon, Rudy Smith, Phil Averitt, and Rev. Diane Luton Blum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to the Erin United Methodist church.
