Margaret Bland Meacham, age 100, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013 at McKendree Village in Hermitage, TN.
A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Greenwood Cemetery, Clarksville, TN with Rev. Jared D. Wilson officiating.
She was born July 30, 1912, in Clarksville, TN, to Mrs. Sue Shobe Bland and Minor Albert Bland. Her devoted father provided a sheltered and privileged upbringing, attended by household staff. Life moved at a leisurely and peaceful pace in those long bygone days. Being an attractive, confident, and genuinely gregarious young woman, assured her of a contented and full local social life.
She graduated from Clarksville High School in 1929 and went away that fall to college at Mary Baldwin in Staunton, Virginia. Eye problems before that Christmas forced her to withdraw from college, not to return until the fall 1930, when she enrolled in a new college, Sullens, in Bristol, TN, where she finished her education.
While in Venice on a chaperoned European tour in 1935, her long term sweetheart, William Davie Meacham of Woodlawn, TN, proposed marriage to her by cable, which she accepted. The marriage took place in Clarksville on March 21, 1936, and a son, William Davie Meacham II, was born to them in 1939. The family moved to St. Louis, MO in 1945, then to El Dorado, AR in 1950, where they remained until the late 1970's when her husband's retirement from banking occasioned the couple's happy return to Clarksville.
Her interests included church works, assisting in the promotion of theatrical and musical performing arts, as well as, fashion shows in her area. She also enjoyed travel with her husband throughout America and abroad.
Margaret was widowed in 1990 when her husband of 54 years passed away after a long illness. Two years later, she moved to the retirement institution of McKendree Village in Hermitage, TN, where she remained until her death.
She is survived by her son, William Davie Meacham II; daughter-in-law, Phyllida; and two granddaughters, Margaret and Victoria, who all live in Edinburgh, Scotland.
