Graveside services will be held at a private memorial service with with her son-in-law, Dr. David Wesner, officiating. A private burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Mayhew was born April 10, 1920, in Anawalt, W. Va. She was the daughter of the late William S. Hale and Mae Hodge Hale, and was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Geneva and her husband Walter. Mabel was a dedicated Army wife, stay-at-home mom and community volunteer. Nothing was more important to Mabel than her family. She always considered it remarkable that a "little girl from the hills of West Virginia" was able to travel the world and live in places like Austria and Germany. When Lt. Col. Mayhew retired in 1960, he and Mabel made Clarksville their home. However, Mabel did not retire. She continued her career by serving as a homeroom mom, Cub Scout den mother, Brownie leader, car pool mom and member of the PTA. She loved to attend her children's baseball, basketball and football games, cheerleading practice and play performances. As a member of the Fort Campbell-Clarksville community, Mrs. Mayhew was best known and recognized for her volunteer work with the American Red Cross. Mrs. Mayhew, a volunteer for more than 25 years, typified the ultimate in the Red Cross volunteer program, donating countless hours in the support of others less fortunate. She was a living example to others that it is better to give than to receive. Her record of service, achievements and unselfish assistance to others earned her the Clara Barton Medal in 1977. Walter and Mabel were members of the First Baptist Church of Clarksville. She is survived by her children, Barbara Wesner (David), Shelia York Nighbert (David) and Kevin Mayhew (Mary); one grandchild, Danielle Kathleen; and a sister, Margaret Jane Tome (Tom). Hers is celebrated as a life well lived. Memorials may be made to American Red Cross, 585 South Riverside Dr., Clarksville, TN, 37040 or the Clarksville-Montgomery County Humane Society.
