LTC (Ret.) Walter Lee Payne, age 92 of Clarksville, passed away on January 14, 2017 at his home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Excell Baptist Church with Rev. Terrell Marcum officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery and Full Military Honors will be rendered.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service on Wednesday at Excell Baptist Church.
Walter was born on August 21, 1924 in Rose Hill, VA, the son of the late Walter Payne and Vera Serber. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Carol Payne. Lieutenant Colonel Payne was in the U.S. Army Infantry and served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam from July 1944 to 1968. Awards include Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart with cluster, and Combat Infantry Badge. After retiring from the military, he retired from the Montgomery County School System. He was a member of Excell Baptist Church and a long time volunteer at Gateway Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Rollins Huckabey Payne; son, Walter Lee (Polly) Payne; daughters by marriage, Lori (Craig) O’Shoney and Jan (Al) Webber; grandchildren, Spencer O’Shoney, Nolan O’Shoney, Kyle Huckabey, Logan Huckabey, Richard Barnouski, Adam Payne, Corey Payne, Cody Payne, Samantha Payne, and Amber Payne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Excell Baptist Church Building Fund.
