Linda Lou (Steed) Simmons, 74, of Clarksville, passed away in her home on August 21, 2024.
The daughter of Sgt. Major James Howard Steed and Dollie (Henning), she was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, while her dad was stationed on Oahu. Entering the world through her father’s military service, it was a lifestyle she would live her whole life. She had in career Civil Service, and it was a career she would work around the United States on U.S. Air Force bases and Army installations from North Carolina to Alaska, Georgia and, finally, Fort Campbell.
Early in her adult life, the military coincidentally took her back to Honolulu, where, during her husband’s assignment to Hickam Air Force Base, she gave birth to her only child.
Independent and self-reliant, she made a home in Clarksville, raising a son on her own while also growing her career at Fort Campbell. She saw her job as a vital service ensuring the soldiers had what they needed to execute their duties as well adjust to life in the military. Even after retiring early for health reasons, she continued her support for soldiers through philanthropy, including with the Wounded Warrior Project.
Beyond her work, she loved the outdoors and motorcycles – even owning one when younger – and she also enjoyed travel early in her retirement, a passion for cultural exploration she passed on to her son.
She is survived by her son and his wife, James and Heather (Begley) Lockwood of Saint Paul, Minn.; her sister, Joyce (Steed) Butler of Brentwood, Tenn.; her brother, James Howard Steed II of Donaldson, Tenn.; and two nephews and a niece. She was preceded in death by her parents and two nephews, Scott Jarrett and Robert Jarrett.
No services are planned. The family requests any memorials be made in Linda’s memory to a veteran’s organization of your choice.
