Leo Schmittou

January 22, 1922 — October 25, 2008

Leo Harman Schmittou, 86, went to be with his Heavenly Father on October 25, 2008. He was born on January 22, 1922 in Cumberland Furnace, Tennesse to Egbert and Janie Browning Schmittou but grew up in Nashville where the family relocated. Leo graduated in 1941 from Nashville Central High School where he was class salutatorian. He was predeceased by his mother, father, sister, Gladys Huffines and brother, Harry Schmittou. He was a loving husband to his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Weakley Schmittou, and devoted father to his children; daughter Kathy Brandon (Jim), son, Barry Schmittou, granddaughter, Kelly Brandon Sebes (Marc), grandson, Jay Brandon, great-grandson, Brandon Sebes, who all survive. He is also survived by his brothers, John Schmittou and Larry Schmittou (Shirley). A veteran of WWII, serving in Aruba and Trinidad, Mr. Schmittou returned home to Nashville and began his career with National Life and Accident Insurance Company where he met his future wife, Dorothy Weakley. They lived in Nashville with their young family until 1958 when they moved to the Weakley farm in Clarksville. After retirement, Leo enjoyed his lifelong love and hobby of plants in opening Plants Etc as well as operating a bookkeeping and tax service business. He was a 42 year member of Madison Street United Methodist Church and a former member of Clarksville Civitan Club. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home and on Wednesday at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the service at noon. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandson, Jay Brandon, grandson-in-law, Marc Sebes, nephews Doug Schmittou, Robert Schmittou, Ronnie Schmittou, Mike Schmittou, Steve Schmittou and Kent Yates. Honorary pallbearers are C.H. O'Brien, Allen Crawford, Elvin Manners, David Mitchell, Charles Simpson and Rev. John Casey. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Urban Ministries, 217 S Third Street, Clarksville, TN 37040.
