Luther Charles ( L.C. ) Baggett, passed away from his battle with cancer at the age of 80, on November 29th, 2020 at his home in Tennessee Ridge, TN.
L.C. is survived by his wife, Sandra; his sons, Lee and Ryen; Lee and his wife Melissa’s two children, Drew and husband Daniel Rodriguez, and Seth Baggett; his 5 brothers: Roy and wife Marilyn, Albert, Clifton and wife Sue, Dale and wife Donna, and Warren and wife Shannon Baggett; many nieces / nephews and cousins. L.C. is predeceased by his parents: Charlie and Lousie Baggett; grandparents: William Albert and Nellie (Stringfield) Baggett and Jesse and Laura (Hembree) Bridges, sister-in-law; Sheila Bagget and niece Lisa Vaughn.
L.C. was born on June 27th, 1940 in Tennessee Ridge, TN. He was the second of 6 sons born to Charlie and Louise Baggett. L.C. graduated from Houston County High School in 1959 where he played varsity basketball all 4 years with a remarkable record. His love for the game blossomed during high school giving him the dream of becoming a basketball coach. After high school, L.C. attended Austin Peay State University for 2 quarters before enlisting into the Army National Guard where he served from 1960-1966. In 1965, L.C. and his future wife returned to Austin Peay both pursuing degrees in education. In December of 1966, L.C. and Sandra were married in a small wedding in Tennessee Ridge at the home of his grandmother. L.C. graduated from APSU in 1971 and began teaching that Fall at Erin Elementary. The following year he started the girl’s and the boy’s basketball programs at EES. In 1976 he transferred to Houston County High School where he began his dream of being the varsity boys coach. During his tenure he also coached the junior varsity boys basketball and golf teams and became Athletic Director for HCHS. In 2009 he retired after 38 years of teaching. As coach, the boys basketball teams won 8 District titles, 2 Region titles and 2 Sub-State championships. The Fighting Irish Boys competed in 2 Tennessee State Tournaments (1982/1983 and 1991/1992). L.C. coached over 425 players plus managers and statisticians in his career. Over his 38 years in education he had a positive impact on numerous players and students. Additionally, he was honored in 1992 as Lord High Mayor during the Irish celebration in Erin, TN. In retirement, L.C. started a fishing supply business where he enjoyed making and selling a wide variety of fishing tackle which he successfully grew and was very proud.
L.C. was a happy and devoted husband to Sandra for 54 years along with being a proud father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers; along with hunting Indian relics, fishing, diving for mussels and the casino for entertainment.
A celebration of his life will be held in the Houston County High Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2021.
In lieu of flowers, the family has decided that a contribution to the Houston County Varsity Boys Basketball Program, or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
