SFC (Ret) Larry Don Brashear, born on October 27, 1938, in Duncanville, Illinois, passed away on January 28, 2025. Having devoted 21 honorable years to serving his country in the US Army, Larry retired with a sense of pride that mirrored the dedication he exhibited throughout his life. Following his military service, he continued to serve as a retired civil servant at Fort Campbell, reflecting his unyielding commitment to his community and nation.
Larry was more than a veteran; he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Numi Brashear. His daughters, Carolyn Mezias, Brenda Lee (Dennis) Baird, and Maria Hunt; son, John David Hunt. Grandchildren—Allison (Faith) Sawyer, Sean (Rachel) Coughlin, Thomas Ryan Coughlin, and Kimberly Hunt. Larry's legacy extends further to his great-grandchildren, James, Kennedy, and Kassidy Sawyer, Julia, John David, Emily, Netty, Winter, and Johnny Sawyer, along with Jimmy, Sam, John and Rose Coughlin, who brought him immense joy and light.
In addition to his immediate family, Larry is remembered fondly by his sister-in-law, Beverly Brashear, and his nephew, Ron Brashear.
Larry's passions were as vibrant as his character. He found joy in the simple things like crossword puzzles, reading his Bible, and his favorite pastime, watching classic episodes of Gunsmoke. His excitement for life's little pleasures extended to fried chicken and the occasional sweet treat, while his Sundays were often spent enjoying the comforting presence of Jimmy Swaggart.
Larry was an active member of groups that resonated with his values, including the Gideons, VFW, NRA, DAV, and the North American Hunt Club. These organizations reflect the depth of his character—dedicated, principled, and always eager to lend a hand to others.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Harold and Nellie Ruth Brashear, his first wife, Rose Brashear and his brother, Dave Brashear. Grandson Larry Sawyer and nephew Don Brashear.
