James Waddell (J.W.) Smith, age 92, died peacefully at his home in Clarksville on Sunday, January 21, 2018.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at First Baptist Church St. Bethlehem with the Rev. Jeff Burris officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
J.W.'s family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the hour of service Wednesday at First Baptist Church St. Bethlehem.
J.W. was born on November 3, 1925 in Waverly, Tennessee to Walter and Lillian Pegram Smith. As a young man, J.W. served 10 years collectively in both the U.S. Army and Air Force and had bravely fought for liberty during World War II. In 1954 he married the love of his life, the former Billie Lewis. He went on to have a fruitful career with South Central Bell / AT&T and enjoyed giving some 30 years of service before his retirement. J.W. enjoyed being outdoors and marveled at it's splendor. He especially enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening. Gifted mechanically, J.W. also enjoyed working on and fixing lawnmowers and other small engines. He was a member of the church family at First Baptist Church St. Bethlehem.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his son, James (Jimmy) Smith, and brothers, Robert Smith and Maxey Smith. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Billie Ann Smith, son, Alan Smith, daughter, Donna Davis (Mike), brothers, Fred Smith and Ralph Smith, six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Gary Adams, David Greer, Jordan Davis, Josh Davis, Craig Pruitt, Alan Smith, and Terry Fain.
