Julia S. Prettyman, 89, Woodlawn, formerly of Macungie, PA, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at Centennial Medical Center, Nashville, TN. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Bethel United Methodist Church with Reverend Cynthia Talley officiating. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, Hopkinsville. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Chapel and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Friday at the church. McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born April 19, 1920, Muhlengerg, PA and was the daughter of Lloyd K. Snyder and Katie Becker Snyder. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel (Ret) William O. Prettyman Jr.; and her brother, Lloyd John Snyder. Mrs. Prettyman was a graduate of the Allentown School of Nursing in 1941. Within a year she joined the U.S. Army attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant prior to her discharge in 1946. She served as a registered nurse in the African and European Theaters. She married her late husband in Cannes, France on August 25, 1945. They again spent time in Nuremberg and Heidelberg Germany for 1949 - 1952. She continued in nursing and caring for individuals in various capacities in Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania. She was active in veterans' affairs and was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW of Lehigh County, PA. She was a loving wife, mother and always thought of others before herself. Survivors include her sons, Colonel (Ret)William O. Prettyman III (fiancee, Sandra Collier), Woodlawn, Robert K. Prettyman (Judy Prettyman), Roanoke, VA; grandson, William O. Prettyman IV, Frederick, MD, granddaughters, Amanda Prettyman Rude (Colbey Rude), Salem, VA, Jessica B. Tomlin, Adamston, MD; sisters, Virginia Sechler, Emmaus, PA, Harriet Clauser (Russell Clauser), Kutztown, PA, Jeannette Aulenbach, Fleetwood, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clarksville American Red Cross or Woodlawn Methodist Church.
