John Halliburton

October 18, 1950 — April 15, 2019

John Richard Halliburton of Madison, TN figured 68 years of this nonsense was enough and went to be with his Maker on April 15, 2019. The Big Man Upstairs came calling, like He seemed to have done a few times before, and this time John decided to lay down his burdens and go on home.
John’s adventure started on Oct 18, 1950 when his parents welcomed him to the world. After a self-described “good childhood”, he completed high school, was drafted into the United States Army, and served a combat tour in Vietnam. Upon returning to Tennessee he was employed by the TVA at the Cumberland City Steam Plant. He met Debora Lee of Erin, TN and used his smooth talk and good looks to convince her to marry him. They were wed in 1971 and had 2 children.
Beginning in his mid-thirties, John had a variety of jobs that allowed him to use his impressive grasp of mathematics, science, and mechanical principles. He was, at various times, a licensed general contractor, roofer, and electrician. (He was also one of the best tree cutting guys you could ask for.) If it needed to be done, he could do it.
Later in life John shifted his focus to helping others and giving back to his community. He would LITERALLY give you the shirt off his back. (He’d still tell you exactly what he thought. He’d just do that while helping you work out whatever jamb you’d gotten yourself into.) At the end of the day, he just wanted to see people happy and enjoying their lives, the way he had. While 68 years may seem like a relatively short run to some, he put it into perspective recently when his son said, “well you had a hell of a run, Dad”. His reply said it all: “I’ve had a hell of a good life”.
He left this world willingly, looking forward to joining his parents, Richard & Mary Halliburton; his brother, Donald Halliburton; and two sisters, Peggy (John) Mince & Regina (Vernon) Sanford. He leaves behind his two children, Richard (Tricia) Halliburton & Heather Abbott; three grandchildren, Rebecca Halliburton, Seibreanna Alkinani, & Anakin Abbott; two sisters, Mary (Roy) Knight & Bobbi (Jack) Birchfield; and many nieces & nephews. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 12:00pm (high noon for those who liked Westerns as much as he did) at The Halliburton Family Cemetery (3370 Halliburton Circle) in Palmyra, TN.
