John Fort

John Dancey Fort – age 88 of Springfield, TN, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Alive Hospice Residence Nashville. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth Jones Fort of Springfield, TN; daughter Myra (Rowan) Fort Leathers of Nashville, TN; two grandsons Robert Alexander Leathers and Benjamin Fort Leathers, both of Nashville, TN; sister Margaret Fort Meggs of Springfield, TN; step-daughter Rebecca L. Jones and step-grandson, William C. Jones of Springfield, TN.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in the Moore Center, Springfield, TN, with Dr. Fred Hembree officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Clarksville, TN.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service.

Mr. Fort was born January 1, 1928 in Montgomery County, TN, the fourth child of George and Lillian Crouch Fort. He is predeceased by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Bettye Brown Speight Fort; his sister Lillian Fort; and his brother George Fort. He grew up in Clarksville, TN where he graduated from Clarksville High School. He attended Austin Peay State University and graduated from Iowa State University.

Mr. Fort retired as an executive of Bank of America. John was formerly an executive in the Agricultural Investments Division of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Memphis, TN and Nashville, TN. He was an Army veteran of WWII, having served in the Pacific Theater during the occupation of Japan. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Springfield. Before moving to Springfield, he was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Nashville, TN. Mr. Fort was secretary of the Tennessee Junior Livestock Exposition, Inc. and past president of the Springfield Kiwanis Club.

Honorary pallbearers are the Nancy Coleman Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church of Springfield; New Chapel Men’s Club; Commerce Union Bank employees in Springfield, TN; and the Mills Sunday School Class of Immanuel Baptist Church, Nashville, TN.
