Jerry "JC" Whitney, 86 of Clarksville, TN passed away Saturday, March 16, 2024, at his home with his wife, Lora and friends at his side. He was born December 4, 1937, in Wellsboro, PA, to the late Jake A. and Gertrude (Spencer) Whitney. Jerry graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1956 and left Wellsboro in 1957 to join The United States Army.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Lora, whom he married on July 30, 1966, in Alexandria, VA; one brother, Donald Whitney (Lucille) of Wellsboro, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, two nephews, and his four dogs, Schatzy, Rusty, Brandy, and Muffin.
His tour of duty with the US Army took him to Massachusetts, Arlington Hall, Virginia, Okinawa, Bangkok, Thailand, Germany, Vietnam (two tours), Montana, Panama Canal Zone, and El Paso, Texas, where he retired in April of 1980 with over 25 years dedicated to serving his country. His awards and medals consisted of the Army Commendation Medal (3rd OLC), NDSM, Vietnam Service Medal w/7 campaign stars, RVN Campaign Medal w/60 device, Meritorious Unit Citation (1st OLC), Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, Meritorious Service Medal (1st OLC), and the Bronze Star Medal.
Following his military career, JC worked for Acme Boot and Civil Service, Fort Campbell and retired in 1992.
He was a very active volunteer in the community. He taught AARP Defensive Driving, served on the board of the local chapter of AARP, drove and picked up food for Loaves and Fishes, has done taxes for AARP Tax Aide Program, was the driver for First Christian Church every Tuesday and Thursday picking up food from Food Lion for the churches food room giveaway program until he passed away.
He was a member of AARP, NARFE (National Active Retired Federal Employees), MOAA (Military Officers Association of America), and VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America).
He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Lora throughout the US and overseas to include Barrow, Alaska, and Antarctica.
NASCAR was his favorite activity; in 1955 he drove a NASCAR stockcar around the Atlanta Speedway and in 2006 he drove at Pocono Speedway.
JC’s service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at First Christian Church, with Pastor Craig Honbarger and Rick Koyama officiating followed by a luncheon.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church.
