James Spurgeon - 1919 James H. Spurgeon, 89, Tennessee Ridge, died Monday, November 16, 2009, at Signature Health Care. The funeral will be held at 2pm Wednesday at Camp Ground C.P. Church with Bro. Terry Mathis, Rev. Ronnie Burgess, and Rev. Ken Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 12 noon til 8pm Tuesday at the funeral home and from 10am til service Wednesday at the Church. Nave Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born December 16, 1919 in Stewart, Tennessee to Finis Ewing and Minnie Buckingham Spurgeon. Mr. Spurgeon was a WWII veteran, a Mason, Gideon and a founding father of the City of Tennessee Ridge. Mr. Spurgeon served in World War II, both in New Guinea and the Philippines campaigns, receiving a Bronze star in each of those campaigns. Mr. Spurgeon was a member of Camp Ground C.P. Church for 62 years serving as Sunday School Superintendent, Youth Director, Deacon and Elder in the Church, where fondly he was known as the chewing gum man. Mr. Spurgeon was a retired automobile salesman, known for his fruit orchard, and singing bass with th Melody Makers Quartet. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Frances Sugg Spurgeon, two brothers (Lester and Brown)and a sister (Margaret Dillon). He is survived by a brother (Martin Spurgeon)of Erin, a son, Howard Spurgeon (Dianne) of Tennessee Ridge, two grandchildren, Howard II (Kelly) and Natalie (Nathan) McLimore, both of Clarksville with five great-grandchildren(Connor, Cody, Ashley, Carly and Sophia). Pallbearers will be Robert Spurgeon, Ricky Spurgeon, Von Self, Mitchell Smithey, Randall French, Don Combs, Ed Coulter and Billy Griffin. Honorary Pallbearers will be Lafayette Simpson, Clayton Harris, Reed Milam, Terrell Flynt, Ira Lee Alsobrooks and A.L. Browning.
