Jackson Gray Cothron was born December 29, 1926, in Dry Branch, Macon County, Tennessee, the son of Lucy Wilson and Martha (Manson) Cothron.
Jack served in both the United States Air Force and United States Navy. He was assigned to the Navy Seabees as a radio operator for the Defense Early Warning (DEW) Line, stationed at Goose Bay Air Force Base, Labrador.
After discharge from the service, he attended Austin Peay University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He met his future wife, Catherin Louise Buckner, in their chemistry class. They were married on June 3, 1955 at the Bethel Methodist Church. They had three children, Jane, Judy, and Anna.
Jack truly was a “Jack-of-all-trades.” He farmed with his father: row crops, tobacco, and livestock. In fact, he farmed all his life. He held a number of jobs over the years: tobacco inspector, pest control, meat inspector, insurance sales, real estate broker, teacher (Hendersonville High School; biology, chemistry, & photography club; Bethpage School; combined 3rd & 4th grades). Jack was the solo builder of houses & barns, using salvaged materials before the green movement began.
In 1971, Jack moved his family to Lancaster, Missouri. He raised cattle, built and operated a laying-house with 50,000 hens. Jack and Louise moved to a farm near Kellerton, Iowa in 1993 to raise Short Horn cattle. In 2009, he & Louise retired, moving to Afton, Iowa.
He enjoyed many hobbies, including: attending auctions, bee keeping, gardening, reading non-fiction book and magazines, planting apple trees (over 100 in the Afton garden alone), learning about anything historic and adventures with his friends. He was a member of the Afton Methodist Church.
Surviving are his daughters: Jane Cothron and partner, Laura Mayer, Newport, OR; Judy Funk, Coatsville, MO; Anna Cothron and husband, Keith Norman, Rosholt, WI: four grandchildren: Katrina (Brandon) Kaestner, Kirksville, MO; Casey Funk, Coatsville, MO; August Norman and Vivian Norman both of Rosholt, WI: two great-grandchildren: Jayde and Holli Kaestner: three brothers: Noble Cothron, Lafayette, TN; Kenneth (Betty) Cothron, Plano, TX and Max (Karin) Cothron, Walworth, WI; sister-in-law: Nancy Poole, Adams, TN: brother-in-law: Joe (Chris) Buckner, Rockton, IL. Jackson is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Preceding Jack in death was his wife Louise and his sisters: Dorothy Sampson and Clara Jones.
