Irene Russell Armistead passed into Glory on March 9, 2014 at Clarksville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. As per her request, her body was donated to Vanderbilt University Hospital for anatomical study and scientific research. Irene was born on July 11, 1921 in Oceola, Arkansas to the late Thomas Luther and Johnnie Russell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard B. Armistead; son, Nardy Armistead; brother, James Russell; sisters, Louise McCraw, Ruth Dillon, Blanche Crouch, and Dorothy LaValla. She is survived by children, Patsy (George) Ketch, Bobby Armistead, and Pam Armistead; grandchildren, Tad (Pam) Ketch, Tammy (John) Shields, Terry (Ann) Ketch, Tracy Armistead, Smith Armistead, Robin Armistead, Heather Armistead, and Jessica (Steve) Cortez; 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Her father died when she was nine years old, so she had to go to work as soon as she was old enough to help support her family. She also worked alongside her husband, Bernard, at the family business, The Pullman Café, Sea & Sirloin Restaurant, Dancy’s Studio, which later became Armistead Photo Service, Montgomery County School System, and last but not least, keeping children in her home, always loving them.
Visitation will be on Sunday, June 21, 2015, from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. at McReynolds Nave & Larson Funeral Home, 1209 Madison Street, Clarksville. Immediately following the visitation, there will be a Memorial Celebration of Life 2 p.m. graveside at Greenwood Cemetery with Brother Harold Witmer officiating.
The family gratefully acknowledges the attention and care Irene received at the Clarksville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Also, thanks to Tennessee Quality Hospice (Crystal Shaw) for their love and compassion. Since the time of her death in March, the family extends their thanks to loved ones and friends for their prayers, cards, and donations made in her memory. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in her memory.
Pallbearer will be her son, Bobby Armistead.
