George Allen Graves, age 85, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at his home with his wife of 68 years at his side.
McReynolds-Nave & Larson is in charge of funeral arrangements. Visitation will be Friday, November 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A private family service and burial will be held and officiated by his nephew, Jeff Harris.
He was born on August 8, 1928 in Obion County, son of Leonard and Irma Taylor Graves. He came to Clarksville to work for James W. Harris Construction where he was a superintendent. He later opened his own small business and retired from Graves and Bumpus Construction in October, 1990.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Clarksville, and a member of Ralph Conklin's Sunday School Class. He was also a deacon for more than 30 years at Gracey Avenue Baptist Church. George was a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan and proud father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Tom Graves, sister, Inez Finney, and two son-in-laws, Harold Bumpus and Anthony Caira.
George is survived by his wife, Dorothy Harris Graves; children, Dianne Bumpus, Monte Graves (Vickie), Debbie Caira, Dottie Couts (Gary), and Donna Rainey (Mike); grandchildren, Charlie Bumpus (Mary), Sandie Hetland (Brian), Angie Smothers (Danny), Elizabeth Graves, Wade Rainey (Kacey), and Layne Rainey; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; sisters, Frances McCollum of Chicago, IL, Thelma Kemp of Rutherford, TN, Betty Davis of Collierville, TN, Sheila Sneed of Burlington, NC, and one brother, Sam Graves of Dickson, TN.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Bumpus, Brian Hetland, Danny Smothers, Mike Rainey, Wade Rainey, and Chris Crigger.
