Frances Bardwell Powers died peacefully in her sleep at her retirement home in West Columbia, South Carolina, at the age of ninety-seven on August 22, 2017. Born in Clarksville, Tennessee, on April 13, 1920, she was the eldest child of Newton Romey Bardwell and Frances Summers Bardwell.
Frances graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, and taught third grade for many years. She was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, Clarksville, Tennessee, until her move to Columbia, South Carolina, at the age of ninety to be close to her family.
Frances was an avid life-long reader and was known affectionately by her family and close friends as “Phoebe”, a nickname given her for her role in a college play. She was an enthusiastic fan of football, basketball and fishing. Her happiest days were spent with her husband, Walter, fishing or boating on Kentucky Lake. An accomplished Bridge and Euchre player, Frances enjoyed hosting friends for dinner and card games.
Frances was a cherished wife, sister, sister-in-law and aunt. Her bright blue eyes and infectious smile lit up a room. Her faith-filled spirit brought joy to all who knew her. She was the epitome of a lady whose charm and grace touched many lives. She will be missed.
Mrs. Powers was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter Lynn Powers, and her brother, Newton Romey Bardwell, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Lucy Bardwell Simpson, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and two great, great nieces.
A celebration of Life will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in Clarksville, with Rev. Greg Glover officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service at the church
Pallbearers will be; Thomas J. Leclair, N.R Bardwell III., Tyne Bardwell, Robert Hudson, and Chip Connell. Honorary pallbearer will be F. Evans Harvill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, First Presbyterian Church of Clarksville, or the Still Hopes Residence Fund (One Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169).
