Fay Douglas Mitchum, age 79, of Erin, TN, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her children on Wednesday, November 20, 2013.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Nave Funeral Home in Erin, TN, with the Rev. Paul Moody officiating. Burial will be at McDonald’s Cemetery, in Tennessee Ridge.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.
She was born March 6, 1934 in Calloway County, KY, daughter of Ira Lee and Gertrude Thomas Douglas, from Henry County, TN, and Calloway County, KY respectively.
Fay Mitchum grew up in the Graves County, KY, and graduated from Sedalia High School in 1951. She soon moved to Memphis, TN, where she was employed by Southern Airways as a flight attendant and later as a counter sales agent. She was married to Dr. Albert J. Mitchum, M.D. for over 25 years and they had 3 children, Patricia, Albert, and Carl, and resided in Erin, TN for the majority of those years. She was first and foremost a wife, homemaker, and mother, but was also active in the community and involved in various civic organizations including Irish Day Leprechauns, Houston Co. Band Boosters, the Housing Authority, and the Bethesda Mission. She was also a member of the Erin Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, sung in the choir and arranged the church flowers. She never met a stranger and was ever ready to be of service to others, especially a friend in need.
She is survived by her children; daughter Patricia of Palmyra, TN; two sons, Albert and Carl, both of Tennessee Ridge, TN; a brother, Rick Douglas of Mooresville, N.C; and three sisters, Nancy Dick, Rachel Cox, and Betty Barnes all from Mayfield, KY; two half-sisters, Linda Douglas, and Janet Dunlap both of Knoxville, TN, and one half-brother, Lee Douglas of Murfreesboro, TN, and four grandchildren, A.J., Wes, Zack, and Isaiah Mitchum.
She is preceded in death in death by her former husband, Dr. Albert J. Mitchum, her parents Gertrude and Ira Lee Douglas, brothers Merideth, Laney, and Tex J. Douglas.
Pallbearers will be A.J. Mitchum, Wesely Mitchum, Dan and Bret Alsobrooks, Richard Rohm, Zack Mitchum, Robert Douglas, and Isaiah Mitchum.
