E. "Mac" Edington

Dr. E. "Mac" Edington, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Madison Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harriet Bryan officiating. Mac's family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Madison Street United Methodist Church and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church.
Dr. E. "Mac" Edington attended Knoxville public schools before moving from Fountain City to attend the University of Tennessee and Memphis State University. In 1960 he attended the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, where he received a DDS degree in 1963.
As a Colonel in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, he served as Commander of the Dental Activity and Dental Surgeon at Fort Knox, Kentucky as well as Ft. Campbell, Kentucky; Exchange officer to the British Army, England; West Point Military Academy; 8th Army and US Forces, Korea; and as a Captain, Commander of the 151st Medical Detachment, Vietnam. He served as liaison and advisor to the Surgeon General of the United States for General Dentistry. He received military decorations including the Legion of Merit (2 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Vietnam Service Medal, Order of Military Medical Merit, and the Order of St. George.
Dr. Edington was an Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) member since 1970 and became an AGD Fellow in 1975 and a Master in 1978. He is a past National President of the Academy of General Dentistry, the second largest Dental organization in the world with over 37,000 members. He served in various leadership positions as well as President from July 1997 to July 1998. In 2005 Dr. Edington was selected as the Outstanding Alumnus for the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry.
In the Clarksville community, Dr. Edington's community contributions were extensive. He was a member of the Clarksville Tennessee Rotary Club with 20 plus years of membership. He had served as President as well as other various offices, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a volunteer dentist with over 150 hours at Good Samaritan Ministries Dental Clinic. He was vice president and chief financial office of Action Enterprises Inc. (also known as Pinnacle Family Entertainment Center).
In his early years, Dr. Edington was a 1st chair clarinet player in high school and the UT Marching Band. Always interested in learning, he took lessons in both tap dance and piano. He loved trimming Bonsai trees and working in his garden in his spare time. Dr. Mac was a member of the Austin Peay Governors Club and member of Madison Street United Methodist Church. He was appointed to U.S. Representative Stephen Fincher's Security Advisory Committee. In addition, he was a University of Tennessee National Alumni Association Public Affairs Committee member, Clarksville/Montgomery County Board of Directors and Co-Campaign Chair American Red Cross (Clarksville Chapter) fundraising committee.
Dr. Edington has served as a member of the United Way Campaign Cabinet, member of the United Way Budget and Allocations Committee, Boy Scouts of America Past District Chairman, and past president of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Clarksville, Tn. He was currently serving as Board Chair for the Youth Coalition.
Until his retirement, he was the senior partner at Clarksville Dental Center, a group practice of 6 dentists in Clarksville, Tennessee. He and the clinic were the first winners of the Middle Tennessee Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethics in the Work Place. He was serving as a Board member of the Middle Tennessee Better Business Bureau.
Dr. Mac and his late wife, Linda Kay, have three sons, Ernest III (Pam); Conrad (Alison), and Eric along with five grandchildren, Ashley, Reid Margaret, Emery, Shea, and "Little Mac". He and Brenda married in 2019 increasing the family by another son, Paul Thaxton (Sally), daughter, Stefanie Thaxton, and grandson, Wyatt.
