David Schartiger

April 28, 1941 — October 28, 2023

SFC (Ret) David Barrymore Schartiger, age 82, of Clarksville, passed away while surrounded by his family on October 28, 2023.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2023 at the chapel of McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home with John Maltis officiating. David will be laid to rest with Full Military Honors at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, Hopkinsville. His family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

David entered this life on April 28, 1941, in Pennsylvania to the late Walter and Martha Schartiger. As a young man, David entered active-duty status with the US Army in 1964 as a Paratrooper and bravely served  2 tours  in Vietnam. Sergeant First Class Schartiger was the recipient of numerous awards and citations including the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Campaign Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm citation. He married his sweetheart, Virginia Gannon Schartiger in 1965 and thoroughly enjoyed God’s grand creation, spending time outdoors hunting and fishing were some of David’s favorite things to do. He was also an avid car enthusiast. David retired from Montgomery County School System; he was a custodian for Montgomery Central Elementary School.   Additionally, David loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He worshipped with his church family at Sycamore Flat Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by siblings, Mart ”Butch” Schartiger, Bernice “Bunny” Cauthern, and Linda Bittinger; and son-in-law, Mike Gilbert.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Virginia Schartiger, survivors include his daughters, Gloria Gilbert, Tammy Seeber (Tim), and Darlene Pinckley (Wayne); sister Karen “Kay” Yommer (Roger); seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
