November 10, 1949 – December 6, 2024
Chief Warrant Officer 4 (Retired) Boyd Landerson Shearer Sr., a devoted family man, decorated veteran, master storyteller, and unapologetic lover of life, passed away unexpectedly on December 6, 2024, at the age of 75. He was born on November 10, 1949, in Russell Springs, KY, to the late Merigo Landerson and Bessie Lee Shearer.
Boyd, affectionately known as "Chief," lived a life that combined service, adventure, and patriotism. He served his country with distinction in the United States Army in historic units such as the 101st Airborne Division and The Old Guard, and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. Chief retired from the military in 2002 after an illustrious career, which included overseas service in Korea, Desert Storm, Bosnia, and Kosovo. His dedication earned him numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Beyond his uniform, Chief was a man of many passions. An avid storyteller, he could turn even the simplest of events into a tale worth hearing, captivating friends and strangers alike with his wit and charm. He often began his stories with his signature phrase, "No shit, there I was..." Chief found joy in the company of a cold beer, the camaraderie of friends and family, and the thrill of collecting and shooting firearms. He found great fulfillment tending to his hobby farm, gardening, and caring for his beloved flock of chickens. Above all, Chief treasured time with his family, creating lasting memories that will live on forever.
Chief is survived by his loving wife, Dee Miller; his son, Boyd Jr. (Katie Jo Doerfler) Shearer; his daughter, Erika (Eric) Hoelscher; his cherished grandchildren, Lane Bryan, Liam Arnold, Iona Jo Shearer, Elowyn and Elliott Hoelscher; his sister, Judy (Tim) Koshiba and his brother Jay Shearer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby (Pamela) Shearer.
Chief’s presence was larger than life, and his legacy is etched forever in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind a community of friends, family, and fellow veterans who will forever cherish his laughter, wisdom, and the unshakable sense of brotherhood he carried with him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Rest easy, Chief, knowing your stories and legacy will live forever through the countless people you have touched.
A memorial service will be held next year, with details to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a veteran's organization of your choosing in Chief's name.
