James W. Latham, Sr., Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army, (Retired) Age 80, of Clarksville, Tennessee, passed away September 29, 2015 at Grace Health Care.
A graveside service with Full Military Honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2015 at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West with Rev. Paul Gardner officiating.
Visitation 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home.
James was born in Sevier County, Tn. May 2, 1935. He was preceded in death by his parents Verlan Haskell and Dixie Louise Walker Latham, twin brothers Carroll Walker and Harrell Walter Latham, brother Benton Hugh Latham, sisters Frances Joan Latham Patty and Betty Louise Latham Tarwater.
He is survived by his wife, Vannah Latham, sons James W. Latham Jr. and David Michael Latham (Laurie), grandchildren Jay, Jordan, Ashley, and Jeremy Latham, four great grandsons, Brayden, Bryson, Bayne, and Maximus, brother Haskell V Latham (Margaret), sister-in-law Evelyn Latham and several nieces and nephews.
He was a life-long member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church which he continued to support until his death.
He retired from the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY June 30, 1977 with 24 years of service. He was the recipient of many service awards and commendations including The Purple Heart, Bronze Star (2), Silver Star, Citation for the Distinguished Service Award, Legion of Merit Award, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (7), National Defense Service Medal (2), Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Campaign Stars. He was a member of the Honorable Order of KY Colonels, and was listed in the Outstanding Young Men of America (1969 Edition).
