C. Nelson `Big Daddy` Stokes, 94, Oak Grove, KY , went to be with his Lord and Savior, died Saturday, January 29,2011, at his home. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday February 2, 2011 at First Baptist Church Faith Building, 435 Madison St, Clarksville with Rev. Cal Hampton and Randle Davis Officiating officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 PM Tuesday February 1, 2011 at McReynolds-Nave & Larson and from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service Wednesday February 2, 2011 at First Baptist Church.
McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Nelson was a native of Todd County, and was born December 16, 1916, the son of the late Raymond and Hallie Stokes. Mr. Stokes was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran, and was owner of Stokes Garage for 29 years and Co-Owner of C&C Auto Parts and Nelson Auto Parts. For the last 34 years he raised horses and farmed on his beloved Christian County Farm. He was a member of Little West Fork Baptist Church for over 50 years and served as a Deacon. Nelson loved the Clarksville-Oak Grove Community and served our community with all he had. Some of his notable civil accomplishments include being a member of Civitan for 56 years, and was a Charter Member of Ringgold Civitan Club. He served as Montgomery County Commissioner, and was Founder and President of Northwest Little League for 41 years, he also served as a City Councilman of Oak Grove, and was past president of Ringgold Elementary School PTA,and he established and managed the first bus service for the Fort Campbell School System in 1960. also past president of Tennessee Independent Garage Owners, and served as a Boy Scout Troop Leader and Troop Commissioner, and enjoyed being a member of East Montgomery Trail Riders Club. Nelson was a active member of Fort Campbell Masonic Lodge # 946, and a Shriner. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Reathy Gibbs Stokes, brother, William Stokes, Sisters, Thelma Brown, Christine Wilyard, Mary Moore, Louise Lisenby, grandchildren, Charles Keith Stokes and Heather Joy Davis. Survivors include sons, Calvin (Shirley) Stokes, C.W.(Corene) Stokes, Edward Ernie Stokes, a daughter Ethel (Bill) Tierney, all of Clarksville, sisters, Pauline Mitchell, Ocie Clark, Nello Rose, Ruth Hurt, Geneva Lange, Jo Hart, Shirley Lack, and 14 Grandchildren, 21 Great-Grandchildren, and 16 Great-Greatgrandchildren. Pallbeares will include David Stokes, Ricky Stokes, Lee Tierney, Wesley Tierney, Michael Smith, Terry Stokes, Jerry Stokes, Lee Edmondson, Paul Landrum, Jack Wallace, Ray Atkins.
