Charles Edward Martin, age 78, of the Stewart Community in Houston County passed away on Monday February 19, 2018 at home with his beloved wife, family and friends present.
A celebration of Life will be held Monday February 26, at 1:00 p.m. at Spring Hill United Methodist Church, 3332 Highway 46 North, Cumberland City, TN. The Martin family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church.
Charles was born Jan. 4, 1940 in Yalobusha County, MS, the son of the late Brewer and Mary Cook Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother J.B. Martin and sister Marguerite Martin. Charles was retired from the newspaper business, having been publisher and editor of The Tate County Democrat (Record) and the Yazoo Herald in Mississippi; The Courier-Index in Arkansas; and Advertising Director of the Daily Herald in Columbia, TN. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. He worked for 13 years as an industrial engineer before making a career change to newspaper publishing. Since 2001 he has encouraged and partnered his wife in ministry to several local churches in the Red River District of The United Methodist Church. He was devoted to their present church families at Cedar Valley and Spring Hill United Methodist Churches.
He is survived by his wife. Jacqueline Pitt Martin; sons Edward Martin (Janene), Dennis Martin (Carla), and stepson Jason Crockett (Allen); daughters Melody Henley (George), Jacqulyn Bishop (Benjamin Chen); 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Earline Morgan Whitt.
Charles was a member of Bumpus Mills United Methodist Church. He was past president of several civic organizations in Columbia and Mississippi including Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Jaycees, and Lions Club. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to any of the following: Cedar Valley United Methodist Church’s Cancer Relay For Life Fund; Spring Hill United Methodist Church’s Building Fund or Bethesda Community Mission (food pantry) of Erin, TN.
