Billy Frank Smith, 81, Clarksville, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, died Saturday, August 11, 2007, at Gateway Medical Center. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Faith Building, with Rev. John David Laida and Rev. Cal Hampton officiating. Burial will be in Rhea Memory Gardens, Dayton, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church.
McReynolds-Nave & Larson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born June 24, 1926 in Rhea Springs, TN, son of J. Elbert Smith and Cordia Collins Smith. Mr. Smith was retired from the Soil Conservation Service under the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Saipan, was a member of First Baptist Church, the Clarksville Rotary Club, and the Governors Club, and was a Board Member of Bi-County Solid Waste. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Helen Ezell Smith and brother, Ted Smith. Survivors include his wife Mary Margaret McWhirter Smith of Clarksville; sons Billy F. Smith, Jr.(Elaine) of Paducah and Shan Smith(Susan) of Clarksville; daughter Melba Smith Dowdy(Chuck) of Clarksville; step-sons Mike McWhirter of Clarksville, John McWhirter of Linn Creek, Mo., and Richard McWhirter(Amy) of Clarksville; step-daughters Kathy McWhirter Littleton(Dick) and Theresa McWhirter Harrington(Paul), both of Clarksville; grandchildren Jay Smith, Rachel Smith Vinson(Jonathan), David Dowdy, Frank Russell Dowdy, Amy Smith Rutledge(Derek), Ashley Smith Posey(Scott), Katherine Hawkins Cherry(Edward), Eric Hawkins(Katie), Cole McWhirter, Paula Ann Harrington, Cameron McWhirter, Emily McWhirter, Matt McWhirter, Josh McWhirter, Taylor McWhirter, Nathaniel Edmondson, David Littleton(Lisa), and Jenny Littleton Albin(Brad); great grandchildren Anna Cherry, Austin Cherry, Mason Posey, Gavin Posey, Brooke Posey, Gus Rutledge, Owen Rutledge, Lauren Littleton, and Logan Littleton Pallbearers will be Jay Smith, David Dowdy, Frank Russell Dowdy, Eric Hawkins, Matt McWhirter, Josh McWhirter, Cameron McWhirter, Cole McWhirter, and Taylor McWhirter. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Clarksville Rotary Club, Carney Wright, and Bill Fitzgerald.
