Billy Alsobrooks

Billy George `Beck` Alsobrooks, 83, Erin, died Monday, January 4, 2010, at Signature Health Care. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Erin Baptist Church with Bro. Paul Moody and Bro. Truitt Cockrell officiating. Burial will be in Alsobrooks Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Alsobrooks was born on March 24, 1927 in Houston County, TN to Mr. and Mrs. James Isham Alsobrooks. He is survived by his wife Barbara Mitchum Alsobrooks; children Dan Alsobrooks and Bret Alsobrooks; daughter-in-law Teresa Alsobrooks; grandchildren Tatum Akina, Louis Alsobrooks, Rebecca Alsobrooks, Alden Allen and Jacob Alsobrooks; sister Lorene Moss; and brother-in-law Eugene Moss. Mr. Alsobrooks has been a lifelong resident of Houston County and graduated from Houston County High School, Austin Peay State University with a B.S. in Education and George Peabody College for Teachers with a M.A. in Education. He was proud to protect his country during World War II by serving in the U.S. Navy. His first career began in public education in 1951 serving as a teacher, coach, principal and then was elected Superintendent of Houston County Schools for two terms. He was the first Director of "Project Reach High" which was a special educational program for sixteen Tennessee counties and was based in Montgomery County. In 1969 he changed careers and became the first Administrator of Trinity Hospital in Erin, TN. Trinity was the first hospital built by Hospital Corporation of America and Mr. Alsobrooks was among the first employees of that Corporation. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. During his retirement he operated Irish Angus Farms and raised registered Angus cattle on Pollard Branch in Houston County. Mr. Alsobrooks was an active member in the Erin Baptist Church, The Masonic Lodge, The Scottish Rite, The Shriners, The Erin Rotary Club, The American Legion, The Stewart-Houston County Industrial Board, The Board of Directors of the Meriweather Lewis Electric Cooperative, The Board of Directors of Houston County Farm Bureau, The Houston County Cattlemen's Association, The Houston County Beagle Club and the Shamrock Club. He was honored as Erin's Lord High Mayor in 1972. Mr. Alsobrooks was a good neighbor to everyone in his community, and a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family.
